The Open Gate Rancher Proudly Presents: My Yarn

I have submitted to five different mills to process our beautiful alpaca fiber into roving and yarn. Each mill produced yarn in different weights and twists. Therefore, there is a lot of variety in what I have to offer.

Mini Skeins

See something you like, but you aren't quite sure how it will knit up? Or what it looks like in person? Need to know what the gauge will be for your project? All of these questions can be answered with a 25yd Mini Skein, to work up a swatch, so you know exactly what you are getting, before you invest in the total amount of yarn necessary for your project, only to find out, the gauge isn't quite right, or the fiber is not how you thought it'd be. Prices & availability will depend.

What's In a Name?

The Open Gate Rancher

At the ranch, people always ask, Do you want me to close the gate? YES!! Please close the gate! If it's closed when you encountered it, then close it after you go through it!! Gates are there for a very specific reason; to keep animals in or out.

If only this Rancher could follow her own rule! This Rancher flits around the ranch all day, doing this and that, tending to the herd, in no particular order, in and out of pens, the barn, and barn stalls. Closing the gates can sometimes be an after thought, and doesn't always get done. Which always leads to a surprise later on down the road!! (See Wrangling Angus on FB for details.)

I believe that the fiber is the fruit of the Rancher's hard work. It is after all, the Rancher who makes the breeding decisions (barring that the gates get closed!!) for the best possible fiber outcomes, and who provides the alpacas with a nutritious diet so they produce fabulous fleece! It is the Rancher who is responsible for the shearing and harvesting of the fiber, and preparing the fiber for the mill. And the Rancher who makes all of the decisions for how the mill is to process the fiber into products.

And sometimes, this Rancher, leaves the gate open…..Hence the name, The Open-Gate Rancher.
